Here at Home & Marine Builders of Lake Norman in North Carolina we are serious about the “Marine” part of our name. If you have a lakefront residential property in the Lake Norman area of North Carolina, we want to help you if you have any needs of building or repair to a seawall.
First thing’s first: what is a seawall? A seawall is basically a wall or embankment built to prevent water from encroaching in a certain spot of land or even from slowly eroding that land. As you may imagine, if a seawall is built, even on a lake, to prevent the flow of water into another space, it is going to take a bit of erosion and wear and tear itself. You’ll want to make sure to maintain any seawalls your property currently has to maintain your land the way you loved it when you chose to buy this luxurious spot in the first place.
Seawalls are generally made of materials like concrete, masonry (types of bricks), or sheet piles (molded from sheet metal or even vinyl to form interlocking pieces together to make a retaining wall). Seawalls are used to stabilize drop offs or cliffs and are built above the beach area and a mainland area to prevent erosion. They are typically built higher than needed to prevent any high lapping waves from cresting the wall onto the other side and causing damage or dangerous conditions, such as if a road or path is on the opposite side of the wall. A quality seawall is designed to resist the waves of worst-case scenarios such as flooding or severe storm surges.
